Congratulations to Cagers!

Congratulations to Simon Quiroz and his film, Cagers, for taking home a Recognition of Human Rights special award at the 2014 Oaxaca Film Festival!  Great job guys!

Another Wedding? Oh My Goodness!

That's right, of course we do wedding makeup and up-dos!  Wedding season must be in full swing, as we just got back in town earlier this week from Houston where my good friends Cindy and Sean just got married!  Cindy had asked if I would do her makeup for the ceremony and I brought along my stylist colleague, Fae Valentine, to help out with hair.

It was an beautiful ceremony and an amazing reception. We tried to snap some pictures, but the hair picture came out a little blurry (since it was kind of a hectic time).  If I can get my hands on some of the wedding photographer pics, I'll post those up too!

Body Painting Party: DC Comics

Body painting is not something that we get to do very often, so sometimes I like to some fun things to keep in practice!  Early tonight, I organized a little body painting party with some of our body painter friends: Donald, Victoria, Alli, and Angel. We got some models together, and painted in the theme of DC Comics super heroes and super villains!

In the end we came out with Fire, Starfire, Poison Ivy, Wonder Woman, and a female Aquaman (Aquawoman?).  However, since most of the models were our friends (and topless), it was a agreed that no photographic evidence would be posted. Everyone had a great time, though, and we're already planning the next body painting party with an Alice in Wonderland theme!

Back to Beauty Basics

While my passions revolve around doing special effect makeup, it is kind of nice to go back to my roots and do some beauty makeup every once in a while.  My friend, Jing-Jing, got married a few weeks ago, and she had asked if I could do makeup for her and her bridesmaids. I brought my hair and makeup colleague, Fae, along and everything turned out fantastic; a great time was had by all.  Jing-Jing was kind enough to send us this thank you note in the mail just recently.

The note reads:

Dear Sherrl,
Words cannot express how thankful I am to you throughout the whole wedding process! Thank you so much for providing one of the best makeup artist/hair stylist. I loved Fae! Thank you for dealing with all the drama and thank you for helping me out at my wedding! I really appreciate you being there, helping out with my mom, Alina, and I heard later your sewing kit came in handy too. ☺  Thank you for staying for my outfit and hair changes. You are a wonderful friend and we definitely need to hang out when I'm back in Austin next.
Love,
Jing-Jing and Daniel

I really appreciate the kind words.  It was a beautiful event and a fun job, and I can honestly say that it was my pleasure.  Now to get back to the scary stuff...

Fun with Gargoyles!

Wow, it's been a while since I last made a blog post -- almost a year!  But it's been a busy year with lots of fun and exciting projects. One most recently that I'd really like to share:  I just got the opportunity to concept and key for the body painting for a segment of the independent short "Pictures at an Exhibition" directed by Melissa Gratia.

I got to work alongside my good body painter friends Victoria and Heather and help make characters from painting come to life, including dancers, a troubadour, and some gargoyles! Check out the video below to see what happens when the gargoyles sneak out and go for a joy ride around town:

This project was loads of fun and I'm really thankful that I was invited to be a part of it!  I promise that I'll try to update the blog a little more often, too.
